How much do you overlap feather edge boards?
For 125mm Feather Edge Boards, We strongly recommend overlapping your feather edge boards by a minimum of 25mm. This would give you a coverage rate of 1 meter per 10 boards. Feather Edge Boards are machined from green timber, and natural expansion and contraction can occur over the life time of the timber. Insufficient overlap may allow gaps to appear in your fence during drier months as the timber contracts.
Should you nail or screw feather edge boards?
When fixing feather edge boards to your fence rails or arris rails, Nails are the most popular option for most installations. When using nails to install feather edge boards, we recommend using a minimum of 50mm Ring Shank or lost head nail. Nails must be externally rated, either plated, galvanised or stainless steel to ensure the fixings will last for the service life of the timber. For a screw application, We recommend using a minimum of 50mm long screws, rated for exterior use, either plated, galvanised or stainless steel. When using screws to install feather edge boards, it is advisable to pre-drill and countersink pilot holes prior to installing to minimise chances of the feather board splitting during installation.
How many feather edge boards do I need per Metre?
When planning a feather edge fence, you need to measure and decide on an overlap amount when measuring the fence. We recommend overlaping our 125mm Feather Edge boards by 25mm to ensure no gaps appear as the timber naturally expands and contracts with the changing weather. If you are using our recommend overlap with your feather edge boards, we would expect a coverage rate of 10 boards per meter of coverage. Using 10 of our 125mm x 2.4m (8ft) Pressure Treated (Green) Feather Edge Boards with a 25mm overlap, you could create a fence size of 1 Meter x 2.4 Meters
Can you paint feather edge boards?
Painting feather edge boards is the ideal way to protect your new fence. Paint adds a physical barrier between the feather edge and the elements, and can help match your new fencing with other garden furniture. Another option would be a wood preserative or exterior stain. Wood preservative and stain colour the feather edge whilst allowing the natural wood grain to show through. Some paints, stains and preservatives can last for several years without further treatment, but always follow the manufacturers guidance and instructions with regards to application and maintainance.
Should I Install Feather Edge Boards Vertically or Horizontally?
Feather Edge boards can be installed both vertically or horizontally. Which ever option you choose, it will not effect the expected performance of the board. Typically, feather boards used in fencing are installed vertically, whilst sheds, buildings and furniture (Such as storage boxes) are installed with the feather edge running horizontally. It is personal preferance which way the timber is installed. When installing feather edge boards horizontally, ensure the narrow edge of the board is on the top edge, this allows water to run off the board. If installed upside down, water can pool and run behind the boards, causing premature rot and decay.
