Fitting and handling

Fix pales vertically to horizontal fence rails, leaving an equal gap between each one for a traditional picket appearance. Before installation, store the timber flat and off the ground in a dry, ventilated area to allow it to acclimatise to site conditions. Any cut ends should be treated with a brush-on end-grain preservative immediately after cutting to maintain protection against moisture ingress.

FAQ

Do these picket pales need treating before use?

They are supplied pressure treated, so no additional preservative is needed on the uncut surfaces. However, if you trim any pale to length on site, apply a suitable end-grain wood preservative to the cut face before fitting to prevent moisture uptake at that point.

Can I paint or stain these pales?

Yes. The sawn finish provides good surface adhesion for exterior wood paints and stains. Allow any surface moisture to dry fully after delivery before applying a finish, and use a product rated for exterior softwood for the best durability.

What spacing should I use between picket pales?

A gap equal to the width of the pale itself, roughly 75mm, is a common starting point for a traditional look. Spacing can be adjusted to suit the overall panel width and your preferred appearance, but consistent gaps give the neatest result.
