Nottage Timbers Rustic Oak Shelves are machined from solid oak, not MDF or softwood cored, or veneered chipboard. These solid oak boards naturally have a lot of character so shakes, cracks & splits may be visible in the final product. Our joinery team, with decades worth of experience, is able to select just the right board for the desired level of "Rustic-ness" required for your needs.
It takes a skilled machinist to know if the defects are cosmetic or structural. We all love rustic oak, but a shelf that splits in half is not ideal.
** PLEASE NOTE ** - These are natural products. The finished piece will not always look identical to any photos shown online or in promotional material. There is no way for us to predict exactly how each piece will finish. Splits, cracks, voids and knots are part of the rustic nature of this product. Our team will not knowingly send out a defective product, but some will be more rustic than others. The dimensions given online are of the starting size (also known as nominal sizes). The finished dimensions are usually 5mm from each surface but can be up to 10mm in some cases. This is because we machine away the top layer to give a clean surface, some pieces may take a few passes to get to a desirable surface finish. For example; a 50mm x 200mm shelf could finished between 40mm x 190mm and 45mm x 195mm
